How to Build a Student Grade Tracker App with AI

Every student does the same arithmetic in their head before an exam: what do I need on this to end up with a B? School portals show marks but rarely the weighted running grade, and almost never the what-if. A grade tracker app lets a student enter their courses and weighting schemes once, log each mark as it comes back, and see the current grade, the GPA, and exactly what the next assignment needs to score.

What a student grade tracker app needs

  • Courses per term with credit hours and a grading scale
  • Weighted categories (homework 20%, exams 50%) with assignments inside
  • Running weighted grade per course and term GPA
  • What-if calculator: the mark needed on remaining work to hit a target
  • Upcoming due dates across all courses

The screens

ScreenWhat it does
TermCourses with current grade, letter, and term GPA
CourseCategories with weights, assignments and marks, running grade
Add MarkAssignment name, category, score, out of, due or returned date
What IfTarget grade in, required average on remaining work out
UpcomingDue dates across courses, next two weeks first

The data model

  • Term: name, startDate, endDate, gpaScale (4.0, percentage, custom)
  • Course: termId, name, creditHours, gradingScale (letter cutoffs)
  • Category: courseId, name, weightPercent, dropLowest
  • Assignment: categoryId, name, score, outOf, dueDate, returned

The build prompt (copy this)

Paste this into ShipNative and it becomes a working React Native app with these screens, navigable in a live preview, in about two minutes:

“A student grade tracker app for high school and university students. Term lists courses with the current weighted grade as a percentage and letter, plus the term GPA computed from credit hours and each course’s letter grade. Course shows the grading categories with their weights, each assignment under its category with score and out-of, and the running weighted grade; categories can be set to drop the lowest score, and ungraded assignments do not count until a mark is entered. Add Mark is a quick form for assignment name, category, score, out of, and date. What If asks for a target letter or percentage and shows the average needed on the remaining ungraded work to reach it, and says clearly when the target is no longer reachable. Upcoming lists assignments with due dates across all courses, soonest first, with a toggle to hide returned work. Letter cutoffs are editable per course because every teacher is different. Works fully offline, no account needed, with an optional backup to the cloud. Screens: Term, Course, Add Mark, What If, Upcoming.”

Then iterate with small, screen-specific prompts (“make the primary button bigger”, “add an empty state”), preview on your own phone, and export the full Expo project whenever you want. The full method: how to build an app with AI.

How it makes money

A one-time unlock for unlimited courses and terms, cloud backup, and the what-if calculator, with the free tier covering one term and three courses. Students have little money and strong word of mouth; a low one-time price spreads through a class faster than a subscription. A school or tutoring-centre licence is the only sensible recurring revenue.

Implementation and the revenue math for every model: how to make money from an app. When you’re ready to ship: App Store and Google Play publishing guides.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I handle schools that use points instead of weighted percentages?

Support both. A points-based course is simply one category weighted at 100% where the running grade is total points earned over total points possible. Let the student choose the mode per course, since they often have one of each.

Should the app connect to the school portal?

Not at first. Portal integrations are fragile, differ by district, and often forbidden by terms of service. Manual entry takes seconds per mark and keeps the app working for every school; a CSV import is a reasonable middle step later.
